The Eighty Years War was a long and bloody conflict, also known as The Dutch War of Independence. In 1568, the seventeen provinces that is the modern Benelux (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg), plus the Hauts-de-France region, revolted against the Spanish sovereign of the region, the mighty King Phillip II and the oppressive Catholic hegemony. The long war linked at its final years with the infamous Thirty Years War, one of the most useless and exhausting conflicts ever to raze Europe.
At the beginning of the XVII century, even if the country was in the middle of this long war, at the same time it experience what the historians call the “Dutch Golden Age”, in which Dutch trade, science, military and art were among the most acclaimed in the world. Names like Rembrandt, Vermeer or Frans Hals have become immortal and their paintings offer the modern viewer incredibly vivid portraits of the characters of that era.
For this first bust of our new 1/10 historical line, we chose one of those Dutch noblemen that you can see quite often in the period paintings. It is loosely inspired in the painting “The Laughing Cavalier”, exhibited now in the Wallace Collection, London. It can be painted in many possible combinations, and it includes photo-etched parts that allow the rapier sword to be portrayed in a much finer and realistic way.
