The Golden Age of Piracy is a period that goes roughly from 1650 to 1730. During these years, the pirate activity in America and also the coasts of Africa saw a notable rise, due to several factors, like the ill efficiency of most colonial governments, an expansion of transcontinental commerce and the many experienced sailors left unemployed after the War of the Spanish Succession that is considered by many historians the first “world war” in the true sense of the term.

Israel Hands was an historical pirate, the second in command to the famous Edward Teach “Blackbeard” and commanded his own ship, the “Adventure”, while both raided the Gulf of Honduras on 1718. Shortly after, Teach run aground his own ship, the “Queen’s Anne Revenge” and took control of the “Adventure”, leaving some of its crew stranded while shooting Hands on the knee.

While his former captain was killed in combat later that year, Israel Hands was captured in Bath, North Carolina and went through a series of trials that ended the careers of many of their crewmates, supposedly testifying against colonial officials that had previously collaborated with him. Some sources speculate that he died as a beggar in London.

Our bust portrays a classic rough pirate of the end of the Golden Age of Piracy, and can be painted in lots of different ways.
