Medieval and Renaissance justice was rough, cruel and final. Hanging wasn't the worst thing that could happen to a criminal - drawing, quartering, beheading and being burned at the stake were much worse. Chidren, men and women could all be hanged for even a fairly petty crime. An 8 year old child was hanged in London as recently as 1814. The last person to be hanged in England was in 1964. Nobility and certain others might be granted the right to be hanged with a silken rope. This would have been a very small consolation! Supply your own lynch mob and rope!
