Imperial Terrain

A small team of modelers dedicated to making 3d printable terrain and accessories for wargamers. Our team plays Star Wars: Legion, Battletech, something called 40k something and DnD/Star Wars RPG.

Imperial Terrain was born in 2016 after a regular group of Star Wars RPG (Fantasy Flight version) players, who regularly played with the standard map grid mat, decided there had to be a better way. We had seen all kinds of cool 3d printed pieces on reddit and thingiverse for DnD and other games so we scraped some money together to buy our first 3d printer. We bought a Prusa Mk2 in the beginning of the year and started the journey of learning all things 3d printing. As we all know, learning a new piece of technology and tuning a printer takes time, patience and skill. After we were tuned in pretty well and what seems like over 100 different file downloads off of thingiverse we started printing terrain for our Star Wars RPG campaign.

But....it wasn't enough. It never is, right?

We wanted more customized terrain. We wanted to build pieces specific to the scenarios we were playing. Dave started doing some research and began cutting his teeth with modeling via Tinkercad. After some months of modeling, printing early prototypes and learning how to print self made files (STLs), Dave decided Tinkercad didn’t offer enough horsepower to produce the detail desired. So Dave set his sights on learning Autodesk Fusion 360 and Blender.

On August 18, 2017 at GenCon, a big announcement was made introducing Star Wars™:Legion and we knew this was a game we had to play. Finally a game with tactical battles similar to 40k but in the Star Wars universe - we went all in. We started by identifying a good scale (~32-34mm) for terrain, researching what boards could look like, scratching out concepts, learning the game mechanics to incorporate into our designs and launched our first piece of terrain: The Small Desert House.

We have and will continue to support the wargaming community by providing terrain and custom tables for many of the North American events including LVO, Northeast Open and Adepticon. As our small band continues to grow in skill and production methods Imperial Terrain will continue to deliver high quality 3d printed terrain to our customers.

Our principle design goals have always been, and will continue to be:

  • Increase game immersion
  • Incorporate game mechanics
  • Create designs that don’t require 3d printed supports (yes, really!).
