Vlad Țepeș, also known as Vlad the Impaler (1431–1476), was a 15th-century Voivode (prince) of Wallachia, renowned for his fierce resistance against the Ottoman Empire and his brutal methods of justice. Ruling during a turbulent period, Vlad sought to consolidate power in Wallachia by curbing the influence of the noble boyars and imposing strict discipline throughout his realm. His infamous use of impalement as punishment earned him a reputation for cruelty, aimed at instilling fear among his enemies and deterring treason. Despite this brutal legacy, Vlad is remembered in Romania as a national hero and a fierce defender of his people, embodying resistance against foreign domination. His life and rule later inspired the legend of Dracula, cementing his place in both history and folklore.
Vlad Țepeș, or Vlad III, was born into the noble House of Drăculești, a branch of the Basarab dynasty. His life was marked by political intrigue and violence, shaped by his years as a political hostage under the Ottomans and his later quest to secure Wallachia’s independence. Ascending the throne multiple times between 1448 and 1476, Vlad faced constant threats from both powerful local boyars and external forces, primarily the expanding Ottoman Empire. He responded with an iron fist, using impalement and other harsh methods to enforce loyalty and reduce the power of disloyal nobles.
Vlad's military campaigns were brutal yet effective; he defended Wallachia through a mix of guerrilla warfare, night raids, and psychological tactics. His most famous victory, the Night Attack at Târgoviște in 1462, saw him successfully fend off a massive Ottoman force led by Sultan Mehmed II, where he famously impaled thousands of captives to intimidate his enemies. Though feared by many in his time, Vlad’s legacy in Romania is complex: he is remembered as a symbol of strength, a ruler who prioritized Wallachian sovereignty, and a protector of Europe’s eastern frontier. His legacy influenced Bram Stoker’s Dracula, transforming Vlad into one of history’s most enduring legends.
