15th century - Holy Roman Empire Mounted Knights MULTI-PART KIT

The knights of the Holy Roman Empire in the 15th century were both warriors and members of a distinct social class. To be a knight during this time meant upholding a feudal code of loyalty, and serving one’s lord or the emperor while still maintaining a position of authority and relative independence within a fragmented and decentralized empire. Knights were expected to provide military service in exchange for land or privileges, acting as protectors of their territories and symbols of martial and social order. The role was both a military duty and a mark of status, and it was increasingly influenced by the evolving realities of warfare.

15th century knights were distinguished by their formidable armor and weapons, which reflected the advancements of the time. Full plate armor had become the pinnacle of personal protection, offering superior coverage while maintaining high mobility. However, complete suits of plate were expensive and often supplemented with other forms of protection. For instance, brigandines—jackets reinforced with overlapping metal plates riveted between layers of fabric or leather—were commonly used, especially for torso protection. These were lighter and more flexible, offering a balance between defense and mobility.

Additional elements of armor included splinted defenses, such as vambraces and greaves, which used metal strips attached to fabric or leather backing to protect the limbs. Mail armor, though less prominent, was still used to cover vulnerable areas like joints and gaps in plate armor, often sewn directly onto the arming doublet (voiders). The bascinet, with its characteristic pointed or rounded visor, was the helmet of choice, providing excellent head protection while allowing for visibility and ventilation through adjustable visors or perforations.

Knights wielded a variety of weapons tailored to both mounted and foot combat. The longsword was a status symbol, while the lance was critical for devastating cavalry charges. On foot, poleaxes were favored over swords for their ability to deliver powerful blows and pierce armor. Daggers, such as the rondel, were carried as a backup weapon, particularly effective for close combat or dispatching incapacitated foes.

This multipart kit gives you the possibility to mix and match its parts to create numerous variants of Holy Roman Empire knights. You can do so with the printed parts, or you could also build the models in your slicer before printing. A video detailing this process will be coming soon.
