Steadfort’s orphanage begat the next generation of Mayreth’s fiercest warriors. Those that called the orphanage their home since the raids began forever held a deep resentment against the Alimrothi, Nils spurring such resentment in many of them. Even when he was still only a boy, Nils would instill hatred against the raiders in the hearts of his peers. A natural leader, he would often rile his troops with impassioned speeches, as though he were inciting a rebellion within the yard of the orphanage itself.
Slowly his army dwindled as the raids became more frequent against the town, the populace of the orphanage being snatched away bit by bit in each raid as soldiers would drag off children kicking and screaming back to their ships in the clouds. Freya was his only friend of old, a girl that entered the orphanage the same day as him. The two became inseparable, like siblings though with a sense of respect and admiration between them both that one would only see within the strongest comrades on the front lines.Nils saw Freya as not only a sister, but his right hand, and his lieutenant in the war against Alimroth that he would ignite the first chance he could.
Now the war has reared its ugly head as the decade of deterrence has ended: the sorcers from the south hired by the Mayrethi government have ended their contracts, and the raids they held back for ten years have resumed in full. The Alimrothi eager for blood and with newer and deadlier weapons launch their assaults against towns once more. Nils now enacts his plan after thirteen long years waiting to take vengeance, and only with his or the Alimrothi’s deaths will he be at peace.
