The 92nd Highlanders, or Gordon Highlanders, was formed in Aberdeenshire in 1794, as a response to the threat posed by the French Revolution. Really soon, they actively participated in many theatres of war of the Napoleonic Wars, from Egypt to Copenhagen, before being deployed in Portugal in 1810. They participated in numerous actions through the Peninsular War as part of Wellington’s force.
They were also a part of the Highland Brigade that was present in the Waterloo campaign, where they participated in one of the most iconic moments of the regiment’s history. The French had attacked the left flank of the Allied line, so the 92nd was ordered to charge them to prevent them from breaking the line. The charge was a success and the French retired in disorder. Suddenly, among them appeared the white horses of the Scots Greys, which had advanced to pursue the enemy. Among rally cries of “Go at them Greys!” and “Scotland forever!”, some of the most impulsive Highlanders grasped the stirrups of the cavalrymen and jumped forward to charge along them.
Our bust portrays an officer of 92nd Highlanders on that day, displaying several iconic elements, like the tartan, the ostrich feathers bonnet and the characteristic basket hilt sword.
