Extract from the diary of captain Thomas Cochrane, on board of HMS Arab, 20. June 1803
"What a godforsaken place we have arrived at! A rocky island in the middle of the ocean, made largely inaccessible by massive waves and steep cliffs. It took us the better part of a day and all the experience of the crew to reach one of the few suitable anchor places for a ship of this size. I struggle to imagine why on earth the Portuguese built an outpost here, the cost and effort required must have been ridiculously high. But we are here now, and come daytime we will scan the shore for a good place to land. I have selected six reliable men that have been by my side for years now, one of them the good doctor who stubbornly refused to be left behind on the ship. As I write these words, I can barely make out the silhouette of the island in the approaching night, and an eerie feeling overcomes me that I cannot shake off. I heard some of the men say they saw strange lights on land, but that is impossible and must have been the sun glistening in a stream."
