This sculpture is a modern representation of Shivaduti, a formidable figure from Hindu mythology, particularly described in texts like the Devi Mahatmyam and the Kalika Purana. Shivaduti, whose name means "the messenger of Shiva," manifests from Goddess Chandi to deliver a dire ultimatum to the asuras Sumbha and Nisumbha, demanding the surrender of the three worlds they usurped, under the threat of being devoured by her jackals.
Crafted with a comic book aesthetic, the sculpture portrays Shivaduti with a dark and fierce appearance. She is depicted with four arms, each bearing a symbol of her divine power: a trident, a scimitar, a severed head, and one hand in the abhaya mudra, offering protection and fearlessness to her devotees. Her matted hair and the garland of human heads around her neck underscore her warrior aspect. A jackal, her faithful vahana, crouches at her feet, enhancing her wild and formidable presence.
This image captures both the terror and the awe associated with Shivaduti, showcasing her as a guardian and warrior deity, embodying the relentless force of divine justice. The sculpture stands as a powerful artistic interpretation, blending mythological narrative with contemporary artistry, making it a striking piece that bridges ancient lore with modern expressions.
