The Vandals (or Wandili ), who are commonly believed to have originated in the region of modern-day Scandinavia (probably in southern Sweden) were an East Germanic population just like the Burgundians and Goths. Pliny the Elder, in fact, maintained in his Naturalis Historia that the Burgundians themselves, such as the Varinni, the Carini and the Gutoni, were part of this population. The Roman historian Tacitus had also spoken about them in his Germania (written in 98 AD), placing them, once again, among the people of Germanic origin: «These people hand down their memories and their history solely through ancient cantari: in them the god Tuistone, born from the earth, is celebrated. His son, Manno, is the progenitor and founder of their lineage: three sons are attributed to him, from whose name the Ingevoni (closer to the Ocean), the Erminoni (who occupy a middle area) derive their name, the Istevoni (i.e. all the others). Some, authorized by the antiquity of times, say that Manno also had other children and therefore the names of the peoples are also more numerous: these are the Marsi, the Gambrivii, the Swabians, the Vandals.» (extracted from the guide sheets contained in the assembly kit)
