Description
Beipiaosaurus inexpectus was a feathered therizinosauroid dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous period, discovered in China’s Liaoning Province.
It measured around 2.2 meters (7 feet) long and was covered in primitive, filamentous feathers, providing evidence of feather evolution in non-avian dinosaurs.
Unlike most theropods, Beipiaosaurus was likely an herbivore or omnivore, using its large claws to grasp vegetation.
Its discovery in the Yixian Formation, a fossil-rich site, shed light on the diversity of early therizinosaurs.
The species name "inexpectus" reflects its unexpected combination of traits, bridging the gap between early theropods and later, more specialized therizinosaurs.
