Description

Moeritherium lyonsi was a small, semi-aquatic mammal that lived during the late Eocene, around 37 to 35 million years ago.

Though distantly related to modern elephants, it resembled a pig or tapir in size and shape, standing about 70 cm tall at the shoulder.

Fossils discovered in North Africa suggest it lived near swamps or rivers, feeding on aquatic vegetation.

Unlike today's elephants, Moeritherium lyonsi had no trunk, but possibly a short, muscular upper lip.

Its unique blend of traits provides crucial insight into early proboscidean evolution, bridging the gap between primitive mammals and their large, trunked descendants.
