Description

Samotherium africanum was an extinct giraffid that lived during the Late Miocene in Africa.

A relative of modern giraffes, it had a shorter neck but a similarly slender body adapted for browsing.

This species is characterized by two prominent ossicones (bony horn-like structures) on its head, which were likely used for display or combat. Unlike today’s giraffes, Samotherium africanum had a more moderate neck length, suggesting it fed on lower shrubs and trees rather than high foliage.

Fossil evidence indicates it inhabited open woodlands and savannas. Its anatomy provides key insights into the gradual evolution of the giraffe’s long neck.
