Description
Protosiren fraasi was an extinct early sirenian (sea cow) that lived during the middle Eocene, around 40 million years ago, in what is now North Africa and the Middle East.
Unlike modern manatees and dugongs, Protosiren retained well-developed hind limbs, indicating it was semi-aquatic and capable of moving on land as well as in water.
It had a streamlined body adapted for swimming, with paddle-like forelimbs and a strong tail.
Protosiren likely grazed on seagrasses and aquatic vegetation in shallow coastal environments. Its transitional anatomy provides crucial insights into the evolutionary shift of sirenians from land-dwelling to fully aquatic lifestyles.
