Description
Ichthyovenator laosensis was a unique spinosaurid dinosaur that lived during the Early Cretaceous period, around 125 million years ago, in what is now Laos.
Measuring about 8–10 meters long, it was a semi-aquatic predator with long jaws and conical teeth, ideal for catching fish.
Its most distinctive feature was a double sail on its back, formed by elongated neural spines that dipped in the middle—unlike any other known dinosaur.
This sail may have been used for display, species recognition, or thermoregulation.
As the first definitive spinosaurid found in Southeast Asia, Ichthyovenator provides key insights into spinosaur diversity and distribution.
