Description

Phiomia serridens was an early proboscidean, a primitive relative of modern elephants, that lived in North Africa during the Late Eocene to Early Oligocene, around 37–30 million years ago.

Smaller than today’s elephants, it stood about 2.5 meters tall at the shoulder and had a relatively short trunk.

Its most distinctive feature was its long, serrated lower tusks, which may have been used for stripping bark, digging up roots, or foraging in marshy environments.

Phiomia inhabited warm, swampy floodplains and forests, feeding primarily on soft vegetation.

As one of the earliest elephant-like mammals, it represents an important step in proboscidean evolution.
