Description
Cuvieronius hyodon was a gomphothere—an extinct elephant relative—that lived from the Pliocene to the late Pleistocene across North and South America.
It was characterized by long, spiraled upper tusks and shortened lower jaws lacking the shovel-like tusks seen in some related species.
Standing about three meters tall at the shoulder, it inhabited open woodlands, grasslands, and highland environments.
Its teeth were adapted for grazing and browsing mixed vegetation, reflecting a flexible diet.
Cuvieronius was among the last gomphotheres to survive before disappearing during the late Pleistocene megafaunal extinctions, likely due to climatic shifts and increasing human pressures.
