Model Description:
This download contains highly detailed models of late production Panzer III AusF M, featuring the short-barreled 7,5cm KwK 37 howitzer, skirts, and additional armor plating on the hull. Documentation and references for the real vehicle were rigorously studied to make the model as geometrically accurate as possible, except in the cases where printability would have to be sacrificed (such as the fender thickness).
Historical Description:
The Panzer III was originally designed as the primary German battle tank, meant to engage with the opposition's armored units directly. This role was rapidly usurped by the Panzer IV, originally an infantry support tank. The earlier models (A-G) featured the 3,7cm KwK 36 L/45 anti-tank gun. As time went on the vehicle was progressively upgraded with increased armoring and firepower.
The Panzer III AusF N was the final version of the vehicle. The AusF N completed the transition of the Panzer III from a battle tank to a support vehicle, swapping places with the Panzer IV and equipping the 75mm found on early 4s. 700 Panzer III Ns were produced, or modified from earlier versions between 1942 and 1943. The vehicle had the same improved armor as the N variant on the hull, though by the time of its service this was not particularly effective compared to other vehicles. The vehicle's production was replaced by the StuG III, which used the same hull but had a lower profile and a more powerful cannon, at the expensive of a rotating turret. By the end of the war the Panzer III became a rare sight, as it was simply not adequate for combat anymore.
In Armored Advance:
In armored advance the Panzer III AusF N becomes essentially an upgrade to infantry support versions of the Panzer IV (A-F1). It features the same cannon but is simultaneously more mobile, and better protected than the early 4s. The 75mm with HE shells can be a major issue for enemy infantry, and can even threaten lighter armored vehicles with a decent amount of damage per hit, albeit without the piercing power of the long barreled 50mm variants.
