There's something fishy about her business...
Granny Brackenbag
Appearance:
An elderly kuo-toa with slick, purple-tinged skin and large, suspicious eyes that gleam like coins in dim lantern light. Despite her advanced age, her body remains sturdy and nimble, moving with the confidence of someone who's outsmarted more swindlers than she's lived years. Her only sign of frailty is the fine wooden cane she carries – kept as polished as her wares.
Her prized pearl necklace draws attention: flawless white pearls, each perfectly round. At its center hangs a golden symbol of Waukeen, which she kisses reverently before sealing any deal.
She wears patched but clean clothing, with hidden pockets and satchels in every fold – some seeming to hold more than they reasonably should.
Background:
Granny Brackenbag was never an ordinary kuo-toa. While her people hid in dark caves, worshiping mad gods and fishing for abyssal horrors, she discovered true power: commerce.
Decades ago, she traded cults for contracts, bloody altars for market stalls, and abyssal deities for Waukeen, the Golden Lady. Now she travels from town to town, always finding the perfect spot to set up her temporary shop.
Personality:
Persuasive: "Haggle, haggle, haggle! I buy, sell, and trade – even things you didn't know you had!"
Mistrustful: Her eyes move independently when someone lies. "Step closer, dearie… but not too close."
Wise (when it suits her): "I've sold sand to a marid, fishling. I know when you're being fooled."
Notable Items:
Noble Wooden Cane: Harder than dragonbone. Has broken noses, swords, and empty promises alike.
Symbol of Waukeen: A golden medallion she licks before closing deals. "May profit unite us."
Suspicious Satchels: They seem normal… until you realize she always pulls more from them than possible.
Rumors:
"She once sold the same horse to three different people in one day."
"Pay the right price, and she'll arrange a meeting with Waukeen herself. But the price is never gold."
"No one knows where her pearls come from, but everyone wants one."
Goal:
Granny doesn't just want wealth – she wants circulation. Coins, stories, secrets – all must flow like a river of commerce. And if a few fools get swindled along the way? Well, that's just profit.
"Come, come! Granny Brackenbag's got what you need… even if you don't know it yet!"
Campaign Use:
Mysterious Item Vendor: "This dagger? Oh, it's just got a little history… nothing a clever buyer can't handle!"
Information Broker: "Heard you're seeking a certain artifact… might help… for a price."
