When the War-King's of the dwarves martial their resources for battle, they often call upon the stone-mages guild. These master artisans of hearth and hall heed the call and stir the mountain spirits to wrath.  On the march, such learned magisters can and do assist the dwarven armies in construction of defensive earthworks and temporary fortifications.
