The Visigoths were a Germanic people that originated in the Balkans and had a significant role in the late Roman Empire. After sacking Rome in 410, commanded by King Alaric, they settled in Southern Gaul as Foederati of the empire in 418. From there, they expanded their authority to Hispania, where they created their most important kingdom, which would last until the early VIII century.

Followers of the Arrianism doctrine, adopted very soon many customs from the Romans, becoming the most successful kingdom after the collapse of the Western Empire. Due to that, they would play a decisive role in one of the most dangerous crises of the V century, the invasion of Attila and the Huns.

After raiding the Eastern Empire but being unable to conquer Constantinople, Attila commanded his army through Northern Italy intending to conquer the Gaul. They were stopped in 451 AD by a coalition formed by Romans, Visigoths, Franks, and some other tribes and kingdoms, in the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains.

Our bust portrays a Visigothic nobleman getting ready for that fateful day that would decide the future of Western Europe.
