The unavoidable but abrupt start of World War One found unprepared many of the countries involved in it.

The French Army was largely regarded as one of the main combat forces of the continent and it was eager to prove itself against the German Army, especially after the defeat on the Franco-Prussian War that led to heavy reparation payments and the loss of French territories in favor of the German Empire.

In spite of that, the organization and uniforms of the French troops remained pretty similar to the XIX century standard. The soldier’s equipment proved inadequate for the realities of the upcoming trench war, but they had to rush to the front in order to stop the swift German offensive that almost ended capturing Paris.

Our miniature depicts a French Zouave Corporal in the uniform in which they fought that first summer campaign of the war. After that, all the standardization measures, including the introduction of the “blue horizon” uniforms and the Adrian steel helmet, configured the image we have today of the French “polius”.
