Modiphius Entertainment was founded in London in 2012 by husband and wife team Chris Birch and Rita Birch. Chris Birch had previously spent 13 years running the video game-themed fashion brand Joystick Junkies and had also worked in the music industry.

The company's first project was the tabletop role-playing game Achtung! Cthulhu, set during World War II with elements of H.P. Lovecraft's myths. In early 2013, Modiphius launched a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund the game, raising £177,000. The game gained recognition in the community and won the “Best Role-Playing Game” award at the UK Games Expo in 2014. In 2013, the company also released the third edition of the popular post-apocalyptic role-playing game Mutant Chronicles. Modiphius developed its own 2d20 game system for its role-playing games, which became the basis for many subsequent projects.

Over time, the company expanded its catalog with games based on well-known licenses. Key releases included the role-playing games Star Trek Adventures, Dune: Adventures in the Imperium, Infinity, John Carter of Mars, and Conan. In 2017, Modiphius acquired the license for the Fallout universe from Bethesda, and in 2018, it released the tactical miniatures game Fallout: Wasteland Warfare, followed by a full-fledged role-playing game set in the same universe. Other well-known projects in the field of miniatures games include The Elder Scrolls: Call to Arms, and Five Parsecs From Home. In addition to role-playing games and wargames, the company also publishes board games such as the cooperative game Thunderbirds by designer Matt Leacock and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – The Adventure Game. The company has also announced the development of two board games based on the DOOM universe.
