That it was decisively beaten was due to the ineptitude of its leaders rather than to any lack of quality in the ranks. Under the mighty Edward I, England's grimmest soldier-king, the armies raised almost every season by the king's feudal vassals had become highly professional. Its inherent quality was no less under his feeble son, Edward II, who led it to disaster in Scotland.
