World War II

World War II was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945. It was the deadliest conflict in human history, with an estimated 50 million to 85 million fatalities. The war involved the majority of the world's nations, including all of the great powers, organized into two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis.

The war began with the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany on September 1, 1939. This led to the declaration of war by France and the United Kingdom. In the following months, Germany conquered much of Europe and formed an alliance with Italy and Japan, known as the Axis powers.

The war saw major battles fought across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. The most notable battles included the Battle of Stalingrad, the Battle of Midway, and the Normandy landings. The war also saw the use of new technologies such as tanks, submarines, and aircraft.

The war had a significant impact on the world, including the formation of the United Nations and the beginning of the Cold War. It also led to the Holocaust, the systematic genocide of six million Jews by Nazi Germany.

The war ended with the unconditional surrender of Germany on May 8, 1945. The dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States led to Japan's surrender on August 15, 1945.

World War II remains one of the most studied and discussed events in history, with its impact still felt today.
