13th century Knights of the Order of Dobrzyn from the time of the Prussian Crusade -

The Order of Dobrzyń, or Knights of Christ, was founded in 1228 by Christian of Oliva, a Cistercian monk and first Bishop of Prussia. Established in Dobrzyń Land to defend against Prussian and Lithuanian raids, the order operated under the auspices of Duke Konrad I of Masovia. The knights were characterized by their white mantles adorned with a red sword and star. They were a small force, consisting of only a few dozen knights and sergeants, which limited their effectiveness in the turbulent region.

The order’s primary mission was to protect the Christian settlers and promote the Christianization of the pagan Baltic tribes. However, due to their limited resources and frequent conflicts, the Order of Dobrzyń faced considerable difficulties. Their strategic position on the frontlines of the Christian-pagan conflict made them a target for frequent attacks, and they struggled to maintain their stronghold.

In 1235, recognizing their struggles and the need for greater support, the order was incorporated into the more powerful and well-organized Teutonic Knights. This absorption allowed the mission to continue under a larger, more resourceful organization. The Teutonic Knights took over the defense and expansion of Christian territories in the Baltic region, integrating the members of the Order of Dobrzyń into their ranks and continuing the crusading efforts against the Prussian and Lithuanian pagans.

The knights of the Order of Dobrzyń were equipped similarly to other medieval military orders of the time: they wore mail hauberks, accompanied by padded gambesons, and surcoats with a red sword and star emblem. They used either great helms or conical or flat-topped helmets with nasal guards and mail coifs for head and neck protection. Their primary weapons were swords, lances and spears, and they carried kite shields displaying their emblem.
