Description

Mammuthus primigenius, commonly known as the woolly mammoth, was a species of elephant that roamed the Ice Age landscapes of Europe, North America, and northern Asia during the Pleistocene epoch, approximately 400,000 to 4,000 years ago.

Adapted to cold climates, it had a thick coat of fur, a layer of insulating fat, and long, curved tusks used for defense, foraging, and digging through snow for vegetation.

Standing up to 4 meters tall at the shoulder, it grazed on grasses, shrubs, and other tundra plants.

Fossil evidence, along with preserved specimens in permafrost, provides invaluable insights into Ice Age ecosystems and prehistoric human interactions.
