Description

Gomphotherium productum was an extinct species of gomphothere, a group of elephant-like proboscideans that lived during the Miocene epoch.

It was a medium-sized herbivore with four tusks—two in the upper jaw and two in the lower jaw—used for digging and grasping vegetation.

Unlike modern elephants, it had a longer, more elongated skull and likely inhabited forests and wetlands, feeding on leaves, soft plants, and aquatic vegetation.

Fossils of G. productum have been discovered in North America, shedding light on the diversity and evolution of ancient proboscideans before their eventual decline and extinction.
