Description

Eohippus angustidens was a small, early ancestor of the modern horse that lived during the early Eocene epoch, around 55 million years ago.

About the size of a fox, it stood roughly 30–40 cm tall at the shoulder and weighed around 4–5 kg.

It had four toes on its front feet and three on its hind feet, adapted for walking on soft, forested ground.

Its low-crowned teeth were suited for browsing soft leaves rather than grazing grass. Eohippus angustidens offers vital insight into the early stages of horse evolution, showing a dramatic contrast to today’s large, single-toed horses.
