Description

Kolponomos clallamensis was an unusual, otter-sized marine carnivore from the early Miocene of the Pacific Northwest.

Despite resembling a bear in overall build, it had a skull and jaw structure adapted for cracking hard-shelled prey such as mollusks, functioning similarly to modern sea otters.

Its powerful bite, robust teeth, and strong neck muscles allowed it to crush shells efficiently.

Kolponomos likely foraged along rocky shores, using both dexterity and strength to access food.

Its unique combination of bear-like ancestry and otter-like feeding behavior makes it a fascinating example of convergent evolution in marine mammal history.
