Over time, as the army grew and its own culture emerged, the voting fell to only the captains, and later to only the commanders. The position of general eventually became something of a status symbol, bought by favors and gold.
That is until Ava the Lioness, a young captain at the time, turned the tide at the Battle of Whisperbridge, defeating invaders and traitors alike, culminating in the death of the craven General Rothari.
The soldiers reinstated the vote, and Ava has held the position of General ever since."
