Model Description:
This download contains a highly detailed model of an early model StuG III AusF G assault gun, featuring the long-barreled 7,5cm L/48 cannon and a plethora of details faithfully recreated to represent the early version of the vehicle. Documentation and references for the real vehicle were rigorously studied to make the model as geometrically accurate as possible, except in the cases where printability would have to be sacrificed (such as the fender thickness).
Historical Description:
The StuG III was the most produced German armored vehicle during World War II. Referred to as an assault gun, early versions of the vehicle possessed the short-barreled 7,5cm L/24 cannon and were used for infantry support. As the war progressed, the StuG III gradually shifted to playing a role more akin to that of a tank destroyer, being upgraded to the L/43 cannon with the StuG III AusF F, and later the L/48 with the AusF F8 and G. The early models featured 50mm of frontal armor, a decent amount for the time. The late models of the vehicle would be upgraded to feature up to 80mm of armor, in addition to the aforementioned long barreled guns.
The StuG III AusF G was the final version of the vehicle, with several production runs featuring minor differences ranging from the gun mantlet design to the addition of a remote-control MG on late versions. The StuG III was based on the Panzer III chassis and featured the same 6-road wheel/side torsion bar suspension that was present from the Panzer III AusF E onward. The StuG III removed the turret from the Panzer III, reducing its weight and cost, and replaced it with a fixed casemate structure allowing for a more powerful cannon to be mounted, albeit by sacrificing some tactical flexibility.
The G variant is distinguishable by its slightly longer gun (L/48 vs L/43), as well as thicker frontal armor, in the form of bolted-on 30mm plates in the case of the early and mid-production StuGs. Additionally, a commander's cupola was added, and the cabin ventilator was moved to the back of the superstructure. The vehicle also received a roof-mounted machine gun to help it deal with enemy infantry.
In Armored Advance:
In armored advance the StuG III AusF G is optimal for relatively cheap, long-range firepower with some additional armor protection and an MG that the StuG III F does not possess. The cannon can fire accurately at distance and features enough penetration to get through a range of hostile armored vehicles. The cannon also features decent damage, comparable to other 75s. While the armor is improved from earlier models, the vehicle saw service later in the war meaning incoming firepower was also improved, Nevertheless the StuG III G has decent protection, especially at range, where the L/48 is still able to perform.
