Varolac

Under the crimson glow of a blood moon, varcolacs stir from their slumber to feast. Among the foul night-beasts which stalk the accursed corners of the world, the varcolac is an apex predator. Part bat, part wolf, and part man, these hulking monstrosities are swift on two feet, swifter on four, and even swifter still when they take to the air on great leathery wings.

Vaguely humanoid, their arms—those of a bat and tipped with razor sharp claws—are much longer than their legs which end in lupine haunches and much of their body is covered in wolf-like fur. With facial features a twisted amalgamation of bat and wolf aspects, they are horrifying to behold. Though anyone who comes face to face with a varcolac has not much of a chance of living to tell the tale. Killer Instinct. Creatures of pure predation, a varcolac is an excellent hunter. Capable of smelling even a drop of blood from over a mile away, they have no trouble locating prey. Once prey has been cornered, even hiding will do it no good as the varcolac’s echolocation allows it to pinpoint the whereabouts of its next meal based on the slightest sound.

Insatiable Hunger. Varcolacs are possessed of an insatiable appetite for raw flesh and blood. Their existence is one of constant hunger. These nocturnal horrors will gorge on flesh and guzzle blood until the first signs of dawn, at which point they will, reluctantly, return to their lairs to hibernate until night falls once more.

Untamed Minions. Though they have little hope of controlling them, powerful vampires may make use of a varcolac as an unwitting guardian of their domain. Varcolacs will not eat dead flesh and thus will leave the undead vampires and their spawn alone but will devour any living creatures unlucky or foolish enough to venture into their hunting grounds. Thus, a vampire might feed a varcolac as one would a stray animal, ensuring it builds a lair near the vampire’s own and acting as a deterrent to unwanted visitors.

Born of Cursed Blood. The varcolacs association with vampires is no mere coincidence. The violent, bloodthirsty beasts are the ultimate union of the quintessential children of the night—the bat and the wolf. Both share a deep and blood-soaked connection with vampires who can both command and shapeshift into the beasts. It is thought that varcolacs are formed not by nature, but by dark magic.

Despite their seeming humanity and sophistication, vampires are, in truth, monsters who feed on the living for sustenance. Those who cannot contain their bloodlust and indulge in wanton carnage and feeding are sometimes cursed and transformed into a varcolac—a savage, primal beast consumed by insatiable hunger. A fitting form to reflect the cruel vampire’s base barbarity. A varcolac’s hunger is agonizing and unending. As such, the vampire is doomed to live eternally a prisoner of its uncontrolled urges.
