In the 13th century, the dense forests of the Baltic States were not only physical landscapes but also the canvas for a rich tapestry of folklore, where mysterious forest wraiths and spirits held a prominent place in the local mythology.
Throughout the Baltic States, these spirits were known by various names, including the "Laumes" in Lithuania. These beings were believed to inhabit the deep woods, often described as ethereal and enigmatic. They were considered guardians of the natural world, and their presence was woven into the daily lives of the people.
The Laumes were thought to be both protectors and tricksters. They could bring good fortune to those who respected the forest and its creatures, but they could also unleash their wrath on those who had ill intentions towards it or its inhabitants, play mischievous tricks or lead travelers astray, especially those who ventured too deep into the woods without showing the proper respect and reverence for nature. An example of their dualistic nature can be found in the lithuanian folktale "the Laumes and the baby": in this story, a hard working woman accidentally leaves her child in a field but is forgiven and rewarded by the fairies when she returns. Another woman, jealous of the other's fortune, tries the same but is punished by the Laumės, resulting in her child's death.
Local folklore was replete with stories of these spirits, often depicted as enchanting maidens or as capricious forest-dwellers who could manipulate time and space. It was common practice to leave offerings, such as food or small trinkets, to appease these forest spirits and seek their favor.
