Description

The Roman Empire was renowned for its engineering. From the civil projects that brought water to cities via acqueducts, or connected the vast reaches of the Roman world with stone roads.

This engineering expertise was put to its most deadly use in siege warfare. Ballista were larger variants of the roman scorpion bolt thrower. Instead of sending an iron tipped shaft through ranks of enemy troops, these siege weapons would hurl shaped stones at enemy walls.

While the ballistae would eventually be outperformed by the later Onager stone throwers, they remained a useful tool in Rome's arsenal late into the empires waning years.
