Description

Hulitherium tomasetti was a large, extinct marsupial that lived during the Late Pleistocene in what is now New Guinea.

It belonged to the diprotodontid lineage, making it a distant relative of modern wombats and koalas.

Roughly the size of a small rhinoceros, Hulitherium had a robust body, powerful limbs, and a large skull adapted for processing tough vegetation. Its teeth suggest a diet of leaves, shrubs, and other coarse plant material from forested or woodland environments.

Hulitherium likely played an important role as a megaherbivore, shaping vegetation structure before its extinction, possibly due to climate change and human activity.
