The German Army was the first to develop and test the flamethrower (flammenwerfer) in combat. First employed near Verdun in 1915, the results were spectacular; no soldier would willingly hold their ground with liquid flames spilling over the parapet. By 1918, the 3rd Guard Pioneer Battalion specialised in the use of flamethrowers and a flamethrower platoon (flammenwerfertrupp) of four to eight man-packed flamethrowers was attached to most stormtroop battalions. Attached flamethrower teams would assist stormtroops and the infantry in clearing enemy trenches and pillboxes. Often just the first lick of flame was enough to elicit surrender or to put enemy troops to flight.
