Lentil could have done a lot of things with his life. He could have been a merchant, a politician, a physician, or an attorney. At least that's what his mother always says when he comes to visit. Then she always asks “but why did you have to be a thief?!” To be fair, he has done all of those jobs, well, pretended to, as part of various heists. Lentil usually shrugs. He doesn’t tell his mother that he first stole something to impress Endri. That, together, they traveled the Five Woods, taking whatever they pleased, living like Kings, daring each other to greater and greater risks, the thrill of young love and the rush of the job so intertwined that there was no pulling them apart.
Lentil doesn’t tell his mother that he steals now, hoping to somehow find Endri again, to encounter her in a darkened treasure vault, to join a thieving crew and find her there, to hear some hint of where she is or why she disappeared that night. He just hands his mother a hefty bag of coins to pay the rent and for the medicine, and, ashamed, his mother takes the money.
