Description

Longipteryx chaoyangensis is an extinct bird from the Early Cretaceous of northeastern China, discovered in the famous Yixian Formation.

It belonged to the enantiornithines, an early group of birds that flourished alongside dinosaurs.

This species is notable for its unusually long, narrow beak lined with teeth at the tip, suggesting a specialized diet, likely catching fish or small prey.

Its wings were well developed, indicating strong flight ability compared to many primitive birds.

With its distinctive skull and agile build, Longipteryx highlights the diversity and ecological experimentation of early avian evolution during the Cretaceous period.
