Description

"This model recreates a 14th-century statue of goddess Chamunda, the fearsome Mother who haunts the cremation ground. Emaciated and fanged, she sits in royal ease upon corpses, haloed by many arms that brandish a sword, trident, skull cup, staff, and shield/book, with other hands in abhaya and boon-giving gestures; severed heads hang from her person. A tiara of skulls, large ear discs, and a garland of heads mark her as the goddess beyond time, while jackals and attendants cluster at the base. The original bronze sculpture is preserved at LACMA, Los Angeles.

In the Devi Mahatmya, Chamunda is the slayer of the demons Chanda and Munda and, in Himalayan and Newar traditions, a protector against war, epidemics, famine, and disaster"
