Description

Shantungosaurus giganteus was one of the largest known ornithischian dinosaurs, living during the Late Cretaceous, around 73 million years ago, in what is now eastern China.

This enormous hadrosaur, or duck-billed dinosaur, could exceed 15 meters in length and weigh over 15 tonnes, making it among the heaviest herbivorous dinosaurs ever discovered.

It possessed a broad beak for cropping vegetation and hundreds of tightly packed teeth adapted for grinding tough plant material. Fossils indicate it likely traveled in herds for protection and social interaction.

Shantungosaurus provides valuable insights into the evolution, ecology, and gigantism of hadrosaurid dinosaurs during the Late Cretaceous.
