Reginald first came to Westlook five years ago, answering a job posting for a physician after the apparent demise of the town’s previous doctor. The pay was high, and being so far from the cities meant he was far from the kingdom’s brewing political tensions, and the Inquisitors. For an outsider, Reginald is now perhaps something of a “naturalised” citizen of Westlook, and has taken on his own set of oddities that makes him seem right at home with the rest of the residents.
A billboard notice was posted in the city of Sowtreck that simply read: Physicians Needed: Westlook. Remote Job - Above Median Pay. Seeing as his practice was beginning to dry up in Sowtreck as more and more folks moved away with political tensions burning high, Reginald Atkinson took the job with barely a second thought, writing back to the employer’s representative and arranging his move to the isolated town at the furthest western reach of the kingdom. Reginald did not know what to expect: he had worked in towns in the Heartlands before, but those towns were only a day’s walk from each other, and less than a week to the major city. Here it was weeks, and none of his peers had ever set foot in the town before.
From the moment he arrived in Westlook, he felt it. Something awry. What he could not say. The people seemed normal enough, but for something absent behind their eyes. They could not tell him what happened to their last physician, even his employer, the town’s lucrative industrial giant: Victor Montgomery, could only tell him that his predecessor simply did not show up to his practice one morning, and was never seen again. It was then that alarm bells should have rang for Doctor Atkinson, but some part of him told him to endure, that his place was here. As years rolled by, the peculiarities grew. Strange visions. Stranger dreams. Odd patients, sharing physiological mutations amongst each other. But it never seemed to startle him, only intrigue him, as he began to no longer consider himself an outsider, but a local.
It was through his work with Victor Montgomery that Reginald came to truly appreciate his craft within Westlook, when his work began to double as a mortician. Victor had always a knack for the macabre, and was particularly becoming interested in the sudden rise of drowned bodies washing ashore on a regular basis. Reginald was asked to dissect them, finding within each one strange growths: polyps, sometimes even a host of fish eggs, and otherworldly biomasses spawning upon these bloated heaps. He didn’t know why, but he was fascinated by it, and did not question why Victor wanted these, but the magnate paid good money for the reports he wrote on each one, and better coin for anything he could extract. The corpses continue to trickle into Westlook even today, carried by ocean currents. Reginald won’t talk about it, save with a few trusted people within his circle, and most townsfolk don’t acknowledge it either, making it just another open secret in the town of Westlook.
