Disembarking at Durban in April 1879 following the disaster at Isandlwana, the 1st King's Dragoon Guards were deployed for lines of communication, scouting, and escort duties. At the Battle of Ulundi in July 1879, a squadron of the regiment joined the final cavalry charge that pursued and routed the retreating Zulu army after the main infantry square broke the Zulu attack.
The following August detachment of the 1st King's Dragoon Guards successfully captured the fleeing Zulu King Cetshwayo effectively bringing an end to active Zulu resistance.
