There is a certain comfort in serving Her Majesty. Every decision has already been made for you. Doubt is dangerous, mercy invites questions, and questions tend to shorten a soldier’s career. All that remains is to obey quickly enough to stay useful.

Perhaps there was a hesitation the first time a prisoner begged to be released. A brief thought that stepping aside could change everything. Such moments become difficult to hold on to when the Queen is watching. Eventually, another order arrives, and the Card Soldier is already moving.

For anyone hoping to escape Creepyland, that obedience is a terrible thing to encounter. Pleading takes time. Explaining takes longer. The soldier has been given an instruction, and somewhere behind the prisoner’s desperate words, the Queen’s impatient voice is getting louder.

Hearts or Spades, the privilege is the same: a place beside the person deciding who suffers next. It can almost feel like safety, until Her Majesty decides to change the rules. Every soldier knows how easily a card can be discarded.
