He is one of the very few lords of the Eternal Machine who still walk on legs they built for themselves.
Long ago, before life on the world that would one day produce humanity had learned to be more than a single cell, the Hexarch was flesh. A lord of a living empire, as all of them were then. He met an enemy whose mind was a weapon and whose saber was its edge. The blade passed through armour, through flesh, and through the assumption that he would die. It severed him at the waist.
He did not die. The archives record no pain response of note. They record a decision. He designed his own replacement: a mobile platform of six segmented limbs, each moving on its own, none of them ever tired. Most beings lose something when they are cut in half. The Hexarch gained an anger that did not fade with the wound.
Then the empire defeated death. Every lord was offered a new body of cold, unknown metal, complete and correct in every proportion. The Hexarch accepted the body and refused the legs. The platform was rebuilt in the new metal, limb for limb, exactly as he had first designed it.
The faces of the Eternal Machine are uniform. Memory of the flesh is considered an inefficiency, and requests for a likeness are almost always denied. The Hexarch’s request was approved. His face panel is cast in the shape of what his kind once looked like, a face older than the first living cell on that small blue world, with sockets above the eyes for senses no living species now has. It was not requested for vanity. It was requested so that, when the time comes, his enemy will know exactly who has returned.
His anger was never repaired. It was reclassified as a standing order, and standing orders do not expire. The Hexarch does not chase. He commands, he waits, and he moves on six legs faster than anything that size should move. Somewhere, a saber is still out there. The Hexarch intends to be present when it is drawn.
