Necrocyborg Voidmaiden Harvester

Description

If you have met the Void Harvester before, you met him: hooded, skull-faced, robed, scythe in hand, crystals gathered at his feet. The Voidmaiden is the same god and the same weapon, woken into a different vessel. The skull mask is still under the hood. The scythe is still in her hands, its long blade traced with circuit lines, its head breaking apart into cubes of unstable matter. The crystals still grow where she stands. But the body under the torn robes is a woman’s shape now, armored and precise, with a crest of spines rising from her back like a cold sun. And beneath the hem, where the cloth comes apart into hard-edged fragments, the segmented intake conduits still coil across the ground, ready to drink.

Among the Void Gods, the Harvester was the patient one. The others hunted stars. The Harvester waited for things to die. Every death leaves something behind - the residual psychic mass of a mind that has just stopped, loose and drifting for a few seconds before anything else can claim it. The Harvester claimed it first, every time. It never needed to hunt. The universe is vast and full of the dying. It only had to stay close.

The Necrocyborgs did not try to cure that hunger. They aimed it. Drained and bound, the Harvester was rebuilt as a weapon. The conduits drink death-mass from battlefields. The crystals store it as charge. The scythe is where it is released, and the decision to release it is not hers to make. At full charge she is a peer of the demon-princes of the hungering void. She has unmade fleets. She has turned moons into slow-turning dust. The Necrocyborgs do not file her discharges with their war records. They file them with their star charts, next to the deaths of suns.

But a god drained small enough to fit a vessel cannot hold what it once held. The harvest is slow and the release is fast. Centuries of gathering can be spent in an afternoon. So between wars she sleeps, sealed in a crypt or standing silent on the long, grinding battlefields where the dying never run out, drinking. Her enemies learned long ago that the only way to beat her is to find her asleep. Few have found her. Fewer came back.

The Necrocyborgs bound the Harvester’s power. They did not bind its shape. Shape is not useful, so it was not included in the instructions. And a god that sleeps on a bed of a million harvested minds does not wake unchanged. Each time, the vessel settles around what it has been carrying. Once it rose as him. This time it rose as her. The Necrocyborgs noted the change, found no loss of output, and closed the file. The dying do not care what face comes for them. They only notice that it arrives first.
