The warriors of Paititi are fierce and indomitable: before charging into battle, they drink ayahuasca, a magical brew, psychoactive decoction prepared from Banisteriopsis caapi vine and a dimethyltryptamine-containing plant, that allows them to commune with the spirits of animals – including large reptiles – to heighten their senses, feel no fear, and become as ferocious and explosive as the ancient creatures they have learned to tame. The connection with the spirit world brought by the psychoactive effects of this decoction makes their behaviour and actions in general almost impossible to control. It is perhaps partly thanks to this that they have managed to survive in the rainforest for millennia, and no one who has ever set foot in the realm of Paititi has ever managed to return home – alive.
