Enter Unferth Basin, a harsh frontier of red dust, ash flats, blacksteel mines, burned conifer fields, red stone cliffs, and gorges beneath the shadow of Titan’s Crown—where orc clans guard roads, mines, wells, and old wounds left by the Roving War.
Across the basin, ancient Aelwyr ruins rise from the ash, blacksteel seams hum beneath clanholds, and restless spirits gather where careless digging, blood rites, or old violence have wounded the land.
What you will find inside the PDF:
Location Perils
- Ashstorms — burning red-brown storms of ash and cinders that swallow roads, obscure sight, choke travelers, extinguish exposed flames, and turn the land into difficult terrain.
- Crownweeps — sudden flash floods that race down from Titan’s Crown after rainstorms, filling dry washes and sweeping creatures, cargo, and debris through ancient riverbeds.
- Cinder Sinks — unstable pits where ash covers burned root tunnels, collapsed roads, and buried Aelwyr foundations, trapping creatures in hot ash, embers, and suffocating dust.
- Blacksteel — a dark metal found in deep seams beneath Unferth Basin, lighter than iron, sharper than steel, and highly receptive to enchantment. Large deposits can resonate with nearby force or magic, sometimes interfering with spellcasting.
- Spirit Scars — wounded places where the spirits of soil, ore, trees, and land remain alive but damaged by ancient war magic. Careless digging, blood rites, or neglect can deepen these scars and turn the land against those who depend on it.
- Travel Across Unferth Basin — rules and guidance for moving through the region by ash skiff, wagon, mount, or on foot, including route checks, delays, hazards, and complications across canyon roads, ash flats, dry washes, and clan territory.
Factions in Conflict
- Basin Walkers — independent shamans who travel between clan territories to repair spirit scars, protect shared water and roads, and limit practices that deepen the basin’s wounds.
- Clan Grimskorn — an old orc clan based in Cor-Cavag, seeking to recover lost influence through blood magic, spirit rites, and Aelwyr discoveries.
- Clan Targokon — the wealthiest blacksteel clan, ruling from Rog-Tagak while attempting to preserve its trade network, secure a new blacksteel deposit, and conceal the decline of its primary mine.
- Originators — a movement among non-orc border communities, building bargaining power beyond clan control and secretly moving blacksteel through hidden cache sites.
- Ridgedogs — a mixed-clan border battalion based at Shieldbreak Hall, sworn to defend the shared approaches to Titan’s Crown without allowing any single clan to control the basin’s border force.
Notable Locations
- Ash Arena — a judgment ground on the Southern Ash Flats where the clans settle disputes that threaten shared land, trade, or water. When restitution fails, ritual combat may decide the ruling.
- Cor-Cavag — Clan Grimskorn’s mountain hold, where public honors from the Roving War stand beside hidden chambers of blood magic.
- Illedir Court — a ruined Aelwyr plaza surrounding the Illedir Marker, where blacksteel resonance can expose buried passages and lost remnants of elven history.
- The Last Conifers — Clan Keldrush’s protected forest remnant, sustained by water channels, patient labor, restorative magic, and careful protection from ash and spiritual damage.
- Rog-Tagak — Clan Targokon’s forge-hold, built over a failing blacksteel mine whose richest galleries have been stripped and whose deepest seams have begun to hum.
- Shieldbreak Hall — the Ridgedogs’ fortified command hall in the eastern foothills, where mixed-clan patrols prepare for threats beyond Titan’s Crown.
Unferth Basin Encounters
- Crownweep Flooding — save teamsters, oxen, and trade goods from a flooded Aelwyr flood splitter before the current destroys the shelter and sweeps everything away.
- Forever Fighting — enter a ruined Aelwyr refuge court where the spirits of orcs, goblins, and gnolls remain trapped in the final moments of an endless battle from the Roving War.
- Old Mother’s Toll — face bandits and koltars beneath the ribs of a gargantuan moss mammoth, where petrified travelers mark the price of refusing passage.
- The Open Walk — encounter a line of gorogg pilgrims crossing the ash flats, while a fallen giantess lies pinned beneath a ruined Aelwyr way shelter.
- The Red Tusk — confront a possessed shaman, a defiled animal shrine, and a wounded moss mammoth spirit bound by a blood-crusted blacksteel spike.
- The Yellow Knives — survive an ambush by ash skiff pirates who conjure ashstorms, strike from the storm, cut loose valuables, and vanish downwind with their plunder.
Perfect for: D&D 5E campaigns focused on orc clans, wasteland survival, blacksteel mines, spirit-haunted ruins, faction politics, blood magic, dangerous regional travel, ancient elven mysteries, blood rituals, and dark fantasy adventure across a brutal frontier of ash and steel.
