13th century - Duke Konrad I of Masovia
Konrad I of Masovia was Duke of Masovia from 1194 until his death, and High Duke of Poland from 1229 to 1232. In his quest to expand his dominion, he launched several unsuccessful campaigns against the neighboring pagan Prussians, including a failed crusade in 1209. Despite appointing the first missionary bishopric in Chełmno, he quickly lost control of the land as Prussian forces regularly devastated the area. Repeated efforts to secure the region only led to escalating conflicts with the Prussian tribes, who retaliated with raids, threatening Konrad’s Masovian lands. Facing relentless incursions, Konrad invited the Teutonic Knights in 1226 to aid in the defense and conquest of Prussia. In exchange, he allegedly granted them Chełmno Land, although this grant is disputed as possibly forged. The Knights soon established a stronghold, marking the beginning of their powerful state in the Baltic region.
Konrad's alliance with the Teutonic Knights soon led to conflicts as they expanded their influence into Polish lands. What began as a strategic partnership to protect his duchy became a serious threat as the Knights grew more powerful in the Baltic region. By 1234, Pope Gregory IX confirmed their control over the land, but tensions persisted, and in 1237, Konrad seized their territory, further escalating tensions.
